Version 3: Approved by the Training and Development Manager 15/05/08

Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all students enrolling with Gryphon Learning are aware of their options with regard to recognition of prior learning.

Definitions

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) involves the acknowledgement of currently held competencies, skills and knowledge acquired by a person through education, work or life experience which may be used to grant status or credit in a subject or module.

Credit Transfer involves recognition of competencies (or equivalent competencies) obtained via a different course than that in which the student is currently enrolling.

Credit Transfer or Recognition of prior learning may result in Advanced Standing, where a student is exempted from part of the course in which they are currently enrolled.

Policy

Students are to be given detailed descriptions of course content and objectives, including skills, knowledge and competencies to be achieved.

Students who can provide acceptable evidence that they already have these competencies, skills and/or knowledge may be exempted from all or part of the assessments and learning activities in a course and may be given credit for these competencies, skills and/or knowledge, at the discretion of the Training Manager and as permitted by regulations and contracts controlling course delivery.

Students who believe they already have these competencies, skills and/or knowledge but cannot or elect not to provide evidence, may request to have them assessed, without being required to provide evidence of engaging in any prescribed learning activities. Where contracts and course delivery regulations permit, the Training Manager may accede to this request.

Procedures

Credit Transfer

During the on-line enrolment process, students are given an opportunity to apply for Credit Transfer, entering details of relevant courses. Students must send certified copies of the evidence to Gryphon Learning.

Alternatively, students may be given Application For Credit Transfer forms which are to be completed and returned to the Training Officer along with certified copies of the evidence.Electronic copies of certified copies will not be accepted.

The Training Manager, or a designated assistant will assess the evidence and use the Enrolment Administration function of the CRM to enter acceptanceor denial of the application.

Credit Transfer will be granted free of charge where

  • students can provide certified copies of statements of attainment showing the nationally recognised unit codes, and
  • the course or qualification packaging rules permit the relevant units to be used as part of the qualification.

Credit transfer will also be granted free of charge where

  • students can provide certified copies of statements of attainment showing the nationally recognised unit codes, and
  • details of the elements of competency and performance criteria for those units are freely accessible via the NTIS web site, and
  • outcomes are deemed equivalent to a unit forming part of the course or qualification in which the student is currently enrolling.

Credit transfer will not normally be granted where an applicant cannot provide certified copies of statements of attainment showing the nationally recognised unit codes. Under these circumstances, the procedures for recognition of prior learning should be used.

The evidence provided by the applicant will be placed in the applicant 's file.

Credit transfer will not be granted for qualifications which do not involve assessment of nationally recognized units of competency.

Recognition of Prior Learning

During the on-line enrolment process, students are given an opportunity to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning, entering details of the Unit of Competency for which they believe they have evidence of competency. Students must download and complete the appropriate form, send certified copies of the evidence to Gryphon Learning and pay the application fee. The Training Manager, or a designated assistant will assess the evidence and use the Enrolment Administration function of the CRM to enter acceptanceor denial of the application.

Applicants are responsible for paying any extra costs.

Evidence may include declarations by supervisors or managers (who are competent to do the assessment) that skills, knowledge or competency have been demonstrated, evidence of activities completed or work done from which skills, knowledge or competency may be inferred or content descriptions, assessment details andresults obtained in courses which are not nationally accredited. Students are responsible for paying any costs associated with checking the information or assessing the evidence.

Where the evidence is in a language other than English, the applicant is responsible for arranging a certified translation and paying any associated costs.

The Training Manager, or a designated assistant will assess the evidence against the performance criteria and take into account any rules and regulations pertaining to licensing requirements. The Training Manager, or a designated assistant will use the Enrolment Administration function of the CRM to enter acceptanceor denial of the application.

The evidence provided by the applicant will be placed in the applicant's file.

Alternatively, students who believe they have the current competencies may choose to enrol in the Unit of Competency and begin the assessments immediately, without undertaking the learning activities.Since most units require that competency be assessed over a period of time so the student can demonstrate consistency of performance, students will be required to spread the assessment over several weeks. This is the preferred course where students wish to satisfy ASICs RG146 requirements.

A Gryphon Learning staff member wishing to deliver or assess a nationally recognised unit of competency may apply for Recognition of Prior Learningfor work undertaken as part of a higher AQF qualification (or a superseded qualification, module or unit.) or industry experience.

Advanced standing

Where a student has been granted recognition of prior learning/ recognition of current competency or credit transfer and the Qualification packaging rules and any licensing requirements permit, the student may be exempted from some or all of the assessment for the relevant Units of Competency.
